Jan 2013 Meeting Date

I must have forgotten to announce the date for next book club is Thursday Jan 24th.  I probably won't be there that night but it will be at Stephanie's house.  I will send the details/reminder in January.  The book is The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman so put it on your Christmas lists!

January Book and Meeting Date

The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman won the poll for book selection.  The meeting date (which only has 8 votes) is a tie for Jan 17th and Jan 24th so I'm leaving the poll open until Monday Nov. 12th....

Book Selection Poll for next meeting

We decided to randomly pick five books from the last month or two NY Times Bestsellers list and vote:

This is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz

The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom

The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman

The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling

Where'd You Go, Bernadette? by Maria Semple

Vote here - Open until November 4th so you have plenty of time to decide!

Note:  This list was not easy to make since I tried to avoid books some of you have already read and I did not want to pick up a book that is in the middle of a series.

There are still MANY FREEBIES from Vistaprint (one of my favorites is the 140 FREE Labels I told you about!)

You can also get a FREE Address Stamp, I personally like this because 1.) I feel like I am constantly writing my address, how nice is it to just stamp it, 2.) You can label so much – books, toys, items you bring to school, etc!

You do not need to make it an address stamp either, just personalize to make it your family's last name or write something like "The Smith Family". I made the This Book belongs to stamp above with inspiration from a Google image.

Shipping is around $5.99.

Book Club is a year old!

At our last meeting, Stephanie remembered that our very first book club was in July 2011 (7/14/11 to be exact).  Even I didn't remember it as I was thinking it was in August.  Anyhow, thank you so much to Steph for commemorating with a cake last time.  In one year, we've read 10 books together (I'm counting each of the Hunger Games books but not the sequel to If I Stay since not everybody read it)!

Next Book

Thank you to Laura for hosting - it was a great place to have the meeting.  I am sure we will end up there again!  And thanks to everyone for keeping up the reading momentum and committing to the next meeting already!  Our next meeting will be Tuesday Aug. 28th with the location to be determined.  Lisa chose Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.

Next Meeting Location

Meeting will be held at the Catbridge Cellars in Antioch on Main Street.  Laura reserved for 630pm since it normally closes at 8 but they have agreed to  stay open until we are done.

They sell wine by the glass or the bottle.  Laura has offered to buy and share a couple of bottles of wine and then if anyone wants more or something different they can decide when they get there.

We can bring our own snacks or appetizers, we will  have a table for our group to set up.

I Love Yous Are for White People Discussion Questions

1.   Lac’s family flees left communist Vietnam by boat when Lac is a very young child.  How do you feel think those experiences influenced the way his parents behaved toward him?
2.   How did the story of Lac’s friend Vu affect the way you view Lac?  Why do you think he included that story in particular?
3.   Pa beats Lac mercilessly to “discipline” him for things many kids do.  While today it may not be as common, how much do you think this influenced Lac’s choices in life?
4.   Lac Su has been quoted saying: “My relatives had taught him (Pa) that his duty as a father was to make sure his children succeed by any means necessary”.  Do you think Western culture (in the US) is any different?
5.   Do you feel Lac’s family lived the “American Dream” by their standards?
6.   The book has some funny and bittersweet vignettes about being an immigrant in the US.  Which one did you enjoy?  Which maybe surprised you?
7.   Is it an especially white thing to say "I love you" a lot? Or maybe, to say it lightly? And to put less emphasis on instead showing it?  Do you think white people tend to say that more often than members of other racial or ethnic groups?  And if so -- why might that be?
8.   The book seems to end abruptly.  What questions did you still have after you finished reading the book?

The polls for the next book and time have been closed.  Our summer meeting will be July 10th at 7pm (Laura to announce where when we get closer).  The book is If I Stay by Gayle Forman.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Email List Update

Just wanted to let everyone know that if you have not come to a book meeting this year, I took you off the email list (you know who you are).  Everyone has busy lives and I don't want to bug people with email.  If you still want to be involved in book club, the information is posted here and on the Facebook page.  In fact, I still want all of you to be involved but I understand if right now is not the right time for you.  If you come to a meeting, I'll add you back to the email list.  I hope all of you understand my reasoning.... : )

Next Book and Meeting Dates

Kelly submitted a list of books we can vote on so please choose wisely!  Consider the length, availability/price and maybe reviews from other readers....  Judging by past comments many of us voted with our hearts/minds but when it came time to buy/acquire and read the book, we weren't so happy about our choices.  We also have a poll for dates to hold the next meeting.  Please vote by Saturday March 4th so we can get turnaround done quickly!  Thanks so much!!!

Poll for Book selection is here.
Poll for next meeting date is here.

Happy Voting!!!

Thanks

to Genesis for hosting last night's soiree!!  I know it was a long book so I'm impressed at all of the people who finished.  It sounds like having it at a restaurant was fine so those of you who are interested in doing that can rest assured we are not going to get kicked out!!! : )

Next Meeting Vote - Last Call

Most of you have voted on the dates for the next meeting.  It's a solid tie between Feb. 21 and Feb. 28.  Given the size of the book, I'm leaning toward Feb. 28th.  If you haven't voted and still want to, vote on your available dates here.  Poll will be open until January 9th.
